"Alternative Biography"
Besides official careers in public service and political science, Glen Browder’s "alternative biography" includes a diversity of experiences and perspectives:
- He claims to be an "American Dreamer" (rising from childhood poverty to enjoy the full blessings of American life).
- His boyhood ambition was to play centerfield for baseball’s Brooklyn Dodgers (and he’s still available for the major league draft).
- He was a sportswriter with the Atlanta Journal (after graduating from college with a degree in history).
- He then worked as an Investigator with the U.S. Civil Service Commission (conducting background investigations for sensitive government positions).
- He served as a Federal Registrar and Poll Observer under the Voting Rights Act (during the late l960s).
- Prior to entering Congress in l989, he worked extensively as a campaign consultant (once helping get a candidate elected who was not even on the ballot).
- Since leaving Congress in l997, he has conducted democracy seminars among civil and military leaders on five continents (including such interesting locales as the former Soviet Union, Mongolia, Colombia, South Africa, and Croatia).
- He has traveled over a million air miles during the past decade (roughly equivalent to circling the globe fifty times).
- He maintains a Top Secret security clearance (with periodic anti-terrorism training).
- He made a documentary appearance in "Thanks of a Grateful Nation" (a Gulf War movie broadcast worldwide on Showtime and NBC).
- He lists Thomas Jefferson and V.O. Key, Jr., among those who have most influenced his public service and political science careers.
- His personal heroes are his wife Becky and daughter Jenny Rebecca (and the other members of their immediate families).
- His philosophy for success in life is "work hard, play smart, and get lucky" (and luck may be the most important part).
