WWW.FUTUREOFAMERICANDEMOCRACY.ORG is an electronic forum for discussing and perhaps enhancing the future of American democracy. Dr. Browder uses this website to share his ideas and endeavors regarding the "Great Experiment" of American democracy.

GLEN BROWDER has bridged the gap between classroom civics and real-world government during a 40-year career as political scientist and public official. Throughout his lengthy career, he has professed himself an "American Dreamer," personally reflecting the challenges and blessings of American democracy. Through public appearances, lectures, seminars, books, articles, and this electronic website, he is combining his broad academic, political, and personal experience to encourage discussion about democracy here and abroad.

Since leaving Congress in 1997, Dr. Browder has worked as Eminent Scholar in American Democracy at Jacksonville State University in Alabama and as Distinguished Visiting Professor of National Security Affairs at Naval Postgraduate School in California. Now, as Professor Emeritus at JSU, he is still working to strengthen prospects for democracy in the Twenty-First Century.

Dr. Browder's primary analytic initiative has been a comprehensive, provocative, but constructive publication--The Future of American Democracy: A Former Congressman's Unconventional Analysis (University Press of America, 2002).

Dr. Browder has pursued his civic mission through a variety of activities and forums, challenging Americans to address the ramifications of their changing democratic system while engaging international audiences in constructive dialogue about various aspects of the democratic experiment. In the years since leaving elective office, he has written, lectured, and consulted extensively in the United States and throughout the world.

According to Browder, this is a modest academic and political endeavor of very personal significance. "While I'm no 'Philosopher-King' (to use Plato's idealized terminology), I feel strong civic obligation to do what I can as a 'Professor-Politician' to help political leaders and average citizens--especially young people--understand and accept their responsibilities for the future of our democratic experiment."

Particularly at the beginning of the Twenty-First Century, he believes that America is undergoing a democratic metamorphosis that, for better or worse, is transforming our nation and the world. "The critical question for contemporary America is how our nation--a people of growing cultural diversity, with increasingly divergent ideals, values, and principles of governance--can continue the collective pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice through the historic framework of representative democracy." Perhaps, Browder speculates, we may have reached the limits of our democratic destiny. As he asks rhetorically but constructively at the beginning of his new book: "Is America dying?"

Additionally, Browder has focused on several substantive matters both academically and politically during his career--including national security, southern politics, and campaign reform; and his work in these and other areas is posted on this website. Currently, he is promoting his a three-book series through NewSouth Books, including The South's New Racial Politics: Inside the Race Game of Southern History (2009); Stealth Reconstruction: An Untold Story of Racial Politics in Recent Southern History (2010), and Professor-Politician: The Biography of Alabama Congressman Glen Browder (forthcoming).
