'Withstanding it is our greatest challenge'

America is facing the greatest challenge it has faced since its founding, with the exception of the Civil War. What is that challenge? Withstanding the forces of "centrifugal democracy," according to Dr. Glen Browder, who was guest speaker at last week's Marietta Rotary Club.

Browder represented Alabama in Congress 1987-1997, is an Eminent Scholar in American Democracy at Jacksonville State University and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of National Security Affairs in the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. He has a doctorate in political science from Emory University and lives in Anniston, Ala.
